Every roof on this page was built by our crew.

Residential roofing across Redding and the surrounding North State — from a single leak to a full tear-off and reroof. If we can repair it, we will tell you so.

    Roof Replacement

When patching stops making sense, we strip the old roof down, inspect the deck, replace what has failed, and rebuild it properly. You get a straight answer about what your roof actually needs — not a sales pitch for more than it needs.

  • Robby and his crew foreman Kenny, and all the workers were hard working, paid attention to detail, never tried to sell anything that was not needed. In fact, they found some dry rot that was not originally visible and fixed that at no extra charge. The job was finished yesterday and it looks beautiful.

About Sunrise Roofing

Two decades of North State roofs, under one name.

Robby Schanuth started earning his roofing experience early. Every grueling Northern California summer, while he was still working through school, he apprenticed to his father and his uncle — both roofers. He learned the trade the way it has always been learned up here: on the roof, in the heat, from people who had done it for years.

After graduating from Central Valley High School in Shasta Lake City, he earned his California Class C-39 Roofing Contractor license and founded Sunrise Roofing in 2005. More than twenty years later, he has a working knowledge of just about every facet of roofing, and the company is still recognized for the same three things it started with: quality, speed, and reliability.

Sunrise Roofing is a local small business. There is no franchise behind it and no out-of-town call center. The reputation Robby has built here is the whole asset — which is exactly why the work gets done the way it does.

  • Learned it young

Apprenticed summers to his father and uncle, both in the roofing trade, while still in school.

  • Central Valley High

Graduated in Shasta Lake City — Robby is from here, not relocated here.

  • C-39 licensed

Earned a California Class C-39 Roofing Contractor license, CSLB #857380.

  • Sunrise Roofing, 2005

Started the company and has been roofing Northern California ever since.

Materials

Quality materials matter more here than most places.

The North State is a hostile environment for a roof. What goes on top of your house should be chosen for this climate — not for whatever gets the bid lowest.

  • Direct summer sun

Redding summers scorch a roof surface. Rooftop temperatures can run 50 to 75 degrees above the ambient air — day after day, for months.

  • Ultraviolet exposure

UV radiation is relentless up here, and it has been shown to measurably accelerate the aging of asphalt shingles.

  • Thermal shock

Temperature swings force the roof deck to expand and contract. Repeated year after year, that cycle fatigues the shingles above it.

What we install

Sunrise Roofing installs the CertainTeed Landmark® Series — an architectural laminate shingle specified for exactly this kind of heat, UV, and thermal cycling.

We have always sourced our materials locally through California Shingle & Shake Company in Redding. They are open to the public with a showroom and samples, so you can put your hands on the product before you choose a color.

Roofing Answers

Straight answers about your roof.

Twenty years of the questions Redding homeowners actually ask — ventilation, underlayment, shingle quality, moss, fire ratings. No sales pitch attached.

Question not covered here? Ask it directly — we would rather answer it than have you guess.

Ask Sunrise Roofing
  • We have the experience, the license, the bond, and the insurance — but what actually sets us apart is treating every job like it's our own home. Sunrise Roofing is a local small business, and our reputation in Redding is the only marketing that has ever mattered to us. We'd rather tell you your roof has five good years left than sell you one you don't need yet.

  • Yes — more than most homeowners realize. Ventilation is a system of intake and exhaust that keeps air moving through your attic. Without it, summer attic temperatures can run 50 degrees above the outside air, and that trapped heat distorts decking and shingles and shortens the life of the roof. In winter the same poor ventilation lets warm, moist household air condense on cold framing and decking, which swells the deck, rots it, and can soak the insulation below. Good ventilation is not an upsell. It's part of the roof.

  • Underlayment is the layer between your roof deck and the shingles. It's a required component of the roof's Class A fire rating, it gives you backup protection if a shingle blows off, and during installation it keeps the exposed decking dry. It's the part of your roof you'll never see and would miss immediately if it weren't there.

  • Not automatically. Shingles with longer warranties do tend to be heavier, but weight alone is not the measure — the asphalt content and the tear strength matter just as much. The CertainTeed Grand Manor is one of the heaviest asphalt shingles made, and it's durable because each shingle is built from two full base shingles, producing four full layers across the roof and more than twice the tear-resistant material of a standard shingle. The construction is what you're paying for, not the weight.

  • Tear resistance is the industry-accepted way to compare how tough a shingle actually is. It's defined by ASTM under the D3462 performance standards for fiberglass shingles, which require a shingle to resist a minimum of 1,700 grams of force on a pendulum-type tear tester. If you're comparing products, that number tells you more than the marketing on the wrapper.

  • The degree of fire resistance your roof needs is generally set by local building code and sometimes by your insurer. Asphalt shingles are manufactured to meet either UL Class A or Class C fire ratings, tested by Underwriters Laboratories to the UL 790 standard. The rating reflects how the roof surface performs against flame spread and against burning brands landing on it — which matters in this part of California.

  • Usually trees. Keep the roof clear of leaves and pine needles and keep limbs cut back. Tree sap contains sugars and nutrients that algae, moss, and lichen feed on, and overhanging limbs both drop debris and block the airflow and sunlight that would otherwise dry the roof out. A shaded, damp, debris-covered roof is a perfect growing environment. A clear one mostly isn't.

  • Low-budget shingles can and do cause problems: color that doesn't match from bundle to bundle, shingle length that's out of spec, not enough asphalt in the shingle, a weak fiberglass mat. Those defects show up as a roof that looks wrong, ages fast, or blows off in wind. On a roof you're keeping for decades, the material is the wrong place to save a few hundred dollars.

  • We've always relied on California Shingle & Shake Company here in Redding for quality materials. They're open to the public with a showroom, samples, and staff who'll walk you through the options — 3760 Old Highway 44 Drive, Redding, 530-226-8008.

  • Call 530-243-8210 or send the quote request form on this page. Quotes are free and there is no obligation. Tell us what you're seeing — a leak, missing tile, an aging roof, a new addition — and we'll take it from there.
